A mixture of orange and red colors, even some light brown. The head was almost a full 1" and it had impressive lace and retention going for it. Aroma, was more like 'what aroma?'

Taste revealed some dark fruit like yeast notes, straddles the line between belgian strong dark ale and English barleywine. The body was almost thin like compared to expectations given the high alcohol and strong yeast notes. But it still hid the alcohol relatively well all things considered (NPR shoutout).

Glad to check it out at the SDIBF because I doubt I would have otherwise or ever will again.

This beer looks the part, a heavy but bright, brownish sort of burnt orange. The orange-hued head is a little loose but keeps up a smallish cap after it fizzes down a bit. it does manage to leave some decent spotting behind.
It's sort of an interesting mingling, tart green apple with sweet toffee, a little earthy with a touch of something like I'd find in a Belgian. It's like it's got candi sugar in it, and it's anchored by a sort of spicy yeast note.
The taste tells me the same thing the nose did: this is certainly an interesting take on the style. It's too light, though there's a fortunate easiness to the alcohol. It's got a little leafy/herbal/steely/dusky bitterness set against tartness and toffee. It's yeasty and a note of grains runs underneath. i'm really not sure what to make of this one.
The feel is, like the rest of this beer, too light. It's definitely too thin, and it really lacks depth. It's a little more on the crisp side, and I'd like more smoothness to be sure.

A: The beer is clear yellowish amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high off white head that quickly died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass as well as some lacing down the sides.
S: Light aromas of toffee, yeast and spices are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has some hints of candi sugar and dark malts, but any sweetness is canceled out by the presence of spices.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation with a slight amount of warming from the alcohol in the finish (as the beer warms up).
O: The alcohol in this beer is rather well hidden so it is quite drinkable. The malts made it taste a little like a hybrid between a Belgian Dark Ale and a barleywine.

Review from 9/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a red-orange amber with a hint of carbonation and no lacing. Light malt with a bit of sour aroma. Medium bodied. Caramel malt, sweet dark fruits, low hops, a bit of Belgian spicing on the finish. A light, pleasant flavor, but tastes watered down. A nicely made, but somewhat bland barley wine. Don't think aging will help this one.

750ml bottle into a tulip. Thanks to JAHMUR for sharing this bit of strangeness.

A: Lightly hazed medium amber body with a solid but fleeting cap of tan foam. No lace. Meh.

S: Sweet, slightly boozy apple cider. Brown sugar. Weird, but not unpleasant.

T: Sweet + sugary at first, with major fruit (apple and grape) following close behind. Big, slightly boozy finish. Tastes like the gross fruit snack you at first so you could save the red ones for last. Yuck.

M: Surprisingly over-carbonated. Soft, but too explosive.

O: This was just strange, but not in a good way. Not recommended.

Cheers!

Shared a 1 PT 9.4 FL OZ bottle of this brew w/ GeoffTheAleMan from Schnucks in Frontenac, MO for $13.49. Poured from the Awesome ocean/ship painted scene on the Bottle labeled "Dutch Barley-Wine Style Ale into a Groupon Pint Glass and does not have a freshness date on the bottle.

Aroma- Has a light bourbon aroma with light spiciness. Has strong malts and quite a bit of intensity. May have fruit in here but the alcohol covers it up.

Appearance- Pours 5 fingers of frothy head that stay forever. Has a darkish, orange color body that is as hazy and full of character as it gets. Sudsy lacing but almost none of it sticks on the sides.

Flavor- Has a strong malty, citrusy, and mild sweet taste all the way through. Has hints of being a Barleywine with its strength and high bitterness. Not sure what a "Dutch BarleyWine Style" is, but I'm digging its complexity!

Mouthfeel- Full Bodied, Very High Carbonation, and leaves tons of dark cherries and a strong malty taste on the palate.

Overall Impression- Very strong, rich, and complexed! I enjoy trying styles that I am not sure of (Dutch BarleyWine) and this one really made me think twice about dissing Holland beer... The only ones I've had from the Netherlands were Heineken(brewery visit) and Amstel/Amstel Light. I would suggest you get your hands on this dangerous and intense brew if your a fan of barleywines.

Okay, so my name is Eric, I’m a big fan of Norse mythology, so this beer should be full of win. I’m drinking a 750 mL bottle poured into a snifter glass. Opening the bottle, and cork comes out easily. We’re off to an ominous start.

My attempts to agitate the beer don’t result in any kind of head formation, though the beer itself clings to the outside of my glass. It’s certainly a pretty color, with a deep consistent amber color.

As I sniff the beer, my first impression is sugary sweetness, not unlike a light caramel. It’s very sugary, with a toffee undertone followed by more caramel. The malt aroma isn’t as heavy as others can be – this is actually relatively light. It also has a certain booziness without the same estery profile that I usually associate with Belgian beers.

My first sip gives me the impression of Belgian candy sugar, and loads of it. Caramel dominates the taste, much like the nose. There are muted notes of raisin somewhere in the background, but this is a caramel bomb. With a beer like this you would expect it to be sweet throughout, but instead, the beer is quite dry, oddly so, particularly in the middle of the beer, but it its defense it does finishes with lingering caramel malt sweetness. This thing also has an almost sour or funky component that seems out of place given the rest of the flavor profile.

The body of the beer is really light, bordering on watery. I don’t’ care if this is a Double, Barleywine, or something in between. I expect more body from this beer and the body is almost inexcusable. It wouldn’t be so bad, but the carbonation levels are quite low, which make the thin profile all the more apparent.

Overall this is an odd mishmash that starts strong, with a promising aroma but goes downhill from there. The taste in and of itself isn’t bad, though it could use a little more sweetness to help balance things out. However, the body of the beer is severely lacking and the carbonation doesn’t help to mask that. On the bright side the alcohol is pretty much undetectable, which is quite a feat. It’s certainly not a bad beer, but just not what I expected it to be.

Shared by Alex, a "Dutch Barleywine." Not sure what to make of that.

A - This is kind of an ugly beer, a brownish orange color with some stuff floating in it. Not much of a head, no lacing.

S - Reminds me of a heavier triple. Belgian yeast, candied fruit, some english style hop aroma. Somewhat strange.

T - I do get an almost barleywine character out of this, but the candied sugar and yeast are dominating enough to make this seem much more like a belgian style beer than any type of barleywine i've had. A little fruity, this is okay, but kind of boring.

M - Smooth, a bit of carbonation, it's also kind of boring.

D - This is surprisingly easy for the ABV, but it went to my head really quickly which made me want to slow down. This beer was an interesting experience, but not great.

750ml corked & caged bottle that proudly proclaims this is a Dutch-style barleywine. No clear freshness date, although I've had this for a while - got it in Secret Santa 2008 from mymrnngjckt. Served in a pint-shaped taster glass.

A - A hard pour yields only a few bubbles, and they quickly dissipate to...nada. No lace, cap, collar, nothing. The body is a murky prune brown with obvious suspended sediment.

S - Belgian yeast, candi sugar, some nebulous fruit character. Slightly musty as well. Surprisingly mellow - you'd never guess this was 9.5%. Unfortunately, it's somewhat bland as well.

T - Some oxidation, caramel apple, lightly toasted grains, toffee, yeast, and candi sugar. Oddly tripel-like. Alcohol is again very well hidden.

M - Low carbonation, but not totally flat as implied by the appearance. A smooth medium-full body, with no alcohol heat.

D - A fairly average Belgian dark - not sure what makes it a "barleywine". The well-hidden alcohol really helps.

What's the difference between a strong Belgian dark ale and a Dutch barleywine? Apparently nothing as the terminology is interchangeable with the brewery.

Orange and dark red hue to the beer, good haze, ample head, great retention and lacing. Aroma was bland, so was the taste kind of. The complexities of the yeast and plum I would guess were somewhat interesting. I was surprised what the beer lacked. . . hops, malt, etc. . . I mean, whatever style they are calling it, it should have some heft, some body, but this was a thin feel. How the alcohol didn't show more, I don't know. This was just unfamiliar territory that I doubt I'll be back in anytime soon.
