12 oz can, no date, from Cottage Hill Package Store in Mobile, AL.
Southern Grist Willie.
Dude. I don't know if this was from the bottom of the fermenter, but I have in my glass probably the most fruit I've ever seen in a glass. Period. Strings of mango skirt my glass. The beer is somewhere between orange juice colored and mango puree. The head is fleeting because there are so many bits of mango. It's mango puree on top. A chunk of mango sits on top of the can. I don't know what in sam hell this is, but it's freaking cool.
Aroma is mango - no surprise there. Some hints of pine and spearmint hide underneath. Some hot cereal.
Despite all of this mango, the beer comes across like a bitter mess. There's heavy, heavy bitter cilantro, ashy wood, quite a lot of mint, a little evergreen, and finally a bit of orange pith. Tons of alcohol phenol. Yeast cake too. Makes you mentally step back a bit. Mango is oddly absent. And with how chunky it is, it feels like something I shouldn't be drinking.
Feel is like a chunky smoothie. There's some smoothness and creaminess and then once in awhile you get a chunk of something. It's un-nerving, you're not sure what you'll get in that next sip. Alcohol heat is absolutely massive on this. Blindly, I'd probably have guessed it's 11-12%.
Overall, I probably got the fermenter dregs. I'd be willing to try another can of this, maybe, but this can is exactly what you never want to encounter in a beer. Hitting the drain now.
Price paid : $2.49 / can
Would buy again : maybe, in case this was a fluke
