Notes:
This brewery closes for around two months between the summer tourist season and the snowmobiler season each Fall and Spring. Their web site warns of this but does not give precise dates. A telephone call ahead is highly recommended before a visit in the Fall or Spring since the location for this brewery is off the beathen bath.

I initially wasn't going to stop here, but due to a late start to the day, we ended up at the falls around lunch. The kids and the in-laws were hungry, and I'm not going to turn down the chance to try new brew, so in we went.

The pub is part of a larger structure that include a retail shop, snack stand, and outdoor fireplace/performance area where you can wait for a table. There's a plate glass window where you can look in on the tanks. The pub looked busy when we arrived, but service was quick and we ended up waiting a few minutes. Just enough time to glance in on some of the merch available in a slice of the pub carved out for retail. If you're a sucker for Up North and/or brewery gear, you'll probably drop a few bucks.

I got the fish and chips and four sampler flight. The fish was fresh caught and breaded, not the typical fish-and-chips you'd find in a pub, more like what you find in most mom-and-pop diners in northern Michigan. The flight was the stout, raspberry wheat, wheat, and pale ale. All were to style, but only the raspberry wheat stood out as memorable.

Here's the thing: nothing here had to be as good as it was. The pub sits in the middle of a state park tourist attraction almost in the middle of nowhere, where the next nearest eatery is probably an hour away. They own the market in the area. They could've served the stuff you find at a chain place, but they don't. The service didn't have to been as fast or nice, but it was. The beer could have been slightly better than garbage and people would still buy it. But I'd call it fair-to-good.

Check it out f you're there. It's not something to drive an hour out of the way for, but it's a shame to miss it if you're in the park.

My wife and I stopped here as part of a pub crawl in northern Michigan and the UP to visit the newer brewpubs (plus several others) that have opened since our last trip ‘up north’. This is not a new brewery but it was our first visit here. (We tried to visit here once before but caught them in one of the two seasonal closed periods.) Evaluating the beers and having dinner was our reason for the stop here.

The place was not busy, but we sat in the dining room rather than at the bar. The pub is a mix of a hunting lodge atmosphere along with a brewpub vibe because there is taxidermy on the wooden walls, and the stainless-steel brewing equipment is also in easy view.

We ordered a sampler flight of the 4 beers that were available ($4.72), and I’m glad we didn’t order larger pours. For a brewery that has been in existence for a number of years, the beers did not seem like a seasoned brewer had made them. They were close to style for flavor, but just generally weak and unexciting. We rated each of them at a C- grade.

Food-wise it was the same story. The menu has a good selection of items, and they were okay, but just not exciting for the two items that we chose for our meals.

Coming here was worth the out-of-the way trip to experience the colors of the Fall leaves on the drive, and for the scenery on the walk down to view the Upper Falls. It’s worth the time for a visit for those reasons, but not so for the beer.
