Fifth Frame calls this a Franconian Lager. It is almost gem clear, dark gold to light amber (SRM 5-7). Random carbonation dances around fine columns that lazily provide no help to a slowly fading one inch head. The head, interestingly, looks like a Mylar foam, and is almost translucent. Archipelagos of lace form on the walls of a PBGC American Lager pint glass.
The aroma is very forward with caramel. Earthy sourdough and caraway spices add contrast. Overall, the aroma is simple and subtle.
The hop bite is surprisingly strong for a Lager, though not overly bitter. Sweetness follows, adding balance. Light apple flavor, combined with herbal nuances, are all simple and subtle. The finish is long and mild, never actually dissipating.
A full body with a soft cashmere texture. The alcohol is more apparent than expected, though still mild. Carbonation adds a light scrubbing sensation.
This is a well-done Lager, showing what the category an achieve. It is easy drinking, with full flavor, though still subtle. This is a perfect beer to enjoy with friends, or just to wind down.
