love this style, think highly of this brewery, and the can art is fire. thanks to my boy for the beer mail! pretty pour, slightly viscous, appropriate for its listed strength, obsidian shine to it, pure black, midnight toned but fully reflective, a short live mocha head rises and falls a little too quickly, nice looking though, sexy black, and unfortunately the last beer i will ever drink from my 2013 crooked stave members teku, broke it this morning putting dishes away, maybe not the best glass for this beer, but it felt right at the time, back off. boy that glass has seen some beers... anyway, this is really good, deeply complex on the malt side, appreciable as a lager, and totally full bodied and palate coating. it is a little sweeter than i generally prefer in the style, it lacks the finish, but it works in favor of the grain layers, plenty of dark roast for sure, balancing bitterness and a kiss of smoke in it, but above that is pipe tobacco, leather, and burnt oak, above that is raisin, dried cherry, and toffee, and above that is baking cocoa, rum, and caramel, really evolves with each sip, and i end up not minding the sweetness, but if they fermented this to dry itd be super strong probably, quite a bit left here. licorice, a little lager yeast, and dark toast element, its really good, but its a little too sweet to drink more than a can of, even if i love the weight the sugar adds, and am impressed with the well hidden alcohol. technically real solid overall, just a design choice. good to see what these guys have become, some really cool stuff here! i remain a loyalist to the baltic porter style!
