On tap at Fifth Frame Brewing in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a silky but nearly still dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.
This smells like melted caramel, milk chocolate, vanilla, and coffee.
I do appreciate the lack of adjuncts here, as the non-barrel versions of this beer are often completely loaded down with dessert. But, it still manages to be both too slight and too sweet. There’s just not enough strong barrel character here – maybe the caramel is from the barrel – but I want some warmth, a blast of oak, something like that. It’s just not there. It was aged in barrels for two years, which is somewhat mystifying to me. It tastes like it was aged in barrels for maybe two months.
This is medium bodied and a little bit thin. It’s reasonably drinkable, even though it’s too sweet, as there’s not much booziness.
This brewery sometimes hits well for me, but more often than not it’s kind of a mess. This isn’t a mess, it’s just quite forgettable. It’s definitely the worst of the two releases of their first BA stouts.
