On tap at Fifth Frame Brewing in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a dark black color, with a very small head, and not much lacing.
This smells like vanilla, oak, spicy bourbon, milk chocolate, and caramel.
This is a pretty significant step up from the white wax Elijah Craig version of Clawfoot Bathtub. There’s actually discernible barrel character here – there’s spice, there’s heat, there’s oak, there’s bourbon. It’s light, but it does pull some of the weight off the sweetness of this beer. The base stout is just very sweet and kind of flabby – it doesn’t punch out of the glass like I want a great barrel aged stout to do.
This is medium bodied, silky, but slightly flat, with a distinct lack of carbonation. It’s not completely still, but I do want a hair more carbonation here.
This is easily better than the white wax. Hopefully if they continue to release barrel aged beers, they follow the lead and build off of the Orange Wax version.
