I refer to these beers as 'near beers, 'a term that captures their unique character. Upon pouring it into a shaker pint, I was greeted by a creamy, frothy, two-fingered white head that dissipated quickly, leaving delicate lacing on the glass behind. The beer's light straw color, tinged with hints of light amber, scored a solid four on the color charts. The beer is crystal clear, with lively carbonation bubbles enriching its visual appeal, a sight that sets it apart.
As I swirled the glass, I was enveloped in a delightful bouquet of dank, grapefruit, herbal, light stone fruit, and oranges. The malts, reminiscent of crackers and lightly toasted biscuits, added a comforting note. The beer's pungent hop profiles, balanced by a solid malt backbone, were a pleasant surprise. Other aromas, such as grass and a skosh of earth, added depth to the sensory experience. This beer is a delight for the senses.
The absence of alcohol does not detract from the beer's appeal. While slightly sweeter than my preference, the malt profile offers delightful cracker and biscuit notes. However, the hops steal the show, with their bright, juicy oranges, floral, dank, grassy, and lightly herbal flavors. This beer leaves a positive impression, making it a worthy choice for any beer enthusiast.
The mouthfeel is astringent, with a crisp finish and slightly dry. The body is medium-light and has medium carbonation.
I had a traumatic experience with Near Beers, and this was a challenge for me to overcome and try. In 2005, I was in Iraq, and they had NA beer from Denmark or somewhere around that area. I wanted something other than water to drink. On a hot day, I cracked one open and lifted it to my lips. I took a massive swig as the beer hit my throat, and in the middle of my swallowing, I felt the paint thinner begin to strip my esophagus of its lining. I immediately spit that shit out and coughed for a good ten minutes. Fast forward nine years later, and I am happily sipping this delightful beer, renewing my confidence in NA beers. It's fantastic stuff, and I would happily drink this again.
