500ml bottle poured into a pint glass
Look: Deep, opaque brown - nothing coming through when held up to the light. Light beige/tan head which is fairly bubbly but soon subsides to a thin, foam cap. Some nice lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell: Dark, roasted barley and yeasts hit you right out of the gate, even before you start the pour. Powerful, but not overbearingly so. There are traces of dark chocolate and fainter coffee notes as well.
Taste: Quite smoky and ashy, which is something that doesn't really come through when you give it a sniff. Good balance of coffee and chocolate flavours too, which compliment, rather than overwhelm, the smokier flavours. Maybe the faintest hint of hop, but really the malt and yeast flavours dominate here.
Feel: Good mouthfeel for a stout - it's not too heavy, the level of carbonation is sensible and it helps to set off the very dry, slightly ashy finish. One of the drier stouts I've had of late, but none the worse for it.
Overall: A classic example of an English stout, I reckon - it's definitely sessionable, being only 4.1% ABV, but some might find the dryness a bit offputting in large quantities. Durham Brewery do good beers, and this is up there with the best of them and a fine contrast to their White Stout.

Bottle. Pitch black with huge, densed beige head. Pretty nice lacing. Roasted malts aroma - mainly dark chocolate, coffee. Flavour is ashy with some hints of coffee and chocolate. Light to medium bitterness. . Dry, medium body, watery texture, soft carbonaion, Aftertaste is bitter and ashy. Really nice classical dry stout.
