500ml bottle. Probably more of a zingy pale lager, but given the name (Good King Wenceslas), 'pilsner' designation on the label, and lack of info on the brewer's website, I'm going with Czech Pilsener...
This beer pours a hazy pale straw colour, with two fingers of thin foamy, rocky white head, which leaves a decent array of chunky lace around the glass upon its slow retreat. It smells of crackery pale malt, and spicy, lemony, zesty grassy hops. The taste is bready, biscuity malt, some mild lemon, and grassy, leafy, floral hops. The carbonation is on the soft side, the body medium weight, clean, and adequately smooth. It finishes just barely off-dry, the zippy, leafy hops presiding somewhat menacingly over the steadfast malt backbone.
While not a stellar example of the 'continental lager' it aspires to be, this offering exhibits enough chutzpah and elan to at least warrant a second call-back. Complex and well-rendered, I had no problem seeing and drinking this as an English rendition of a Bohemian specialty.
