A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Aug 2018. Purchased a while back from B&M. Described on the label as a premium ale brewed with sweet gale (bog myrtle); supposedly inspired by a 12th century recipe and fermented in open squares.
A: Poured into a straight pint glass. A deep marmalade-orange colour with good clarity and light carbonation. Forms a large head of frothy white foam that lasts for a moment before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Nice lacing.
S: Aroma of fruity ale yeast with hints of stewed leaves, hay, faint myrtle, caramel malt, a touch of barley sugar and vague earthiness in the background. OK but won't blow your socks off.
T: Tastes of fruity ale yeast with notes of yeast esters, stewed hops, hay/leafiness, subtle myrtle, caramel malt, mild barley sugar and a hint of earthiness. Quite dry, followed by a substantial leafy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with spritzy carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of bitter stewed hops, light myrtle, leafiness, ale yeast and mild caramel malt.
O: Alright I suppose, but nothing special. The concept is better than the execution. Looks OK, while the aroma and flavour are a blend of ale yeast, stewed leafy hops, herbal hints and caramel malt. Body is pleasant enough. The sweet gale is there but quite subtle. Drinkable but forgettable - no need to hunt it down.
