Presentation: Sampled at Fernandes Brewery Tap on Friday 18th March during my Easter Trip to UK & Belgium.
Simple laminated yellow & black paper pump-clip with one of those cheap white plastic clips on the back of it. Has the words Goose Eye Brewery ABV 5.2% - Over & Stout, yet listed on the Chalkboard as 4.5%, which meant it was sold cheaper than it should be as the beers in Fernandes are priced and sold by strength bands.
Appearance: Jet black body with a dark tan head, wow this really looked the biz in the Pint Glass when pulled. Tight head that lasted and provided a creamy moustache after the first sip. Classic Stout looks.
Nose: Roasted malts with a bitter dark cooking chocolate aroma. Light sourness in the finish when deeply inhaled which didnt worry me unduly in the beginning.
Taste: Roasted malt start with a dark chocolate truffle in the middle. Finish though was disappointing as was the latter third of this brew. Went from creamy to buttery and the roasted bitterness went sour and acidic. Lingering lactic ending. Started good but failed to live up to its potential in dramatic fashion, sadly. Dry finish nonetheless. The finish easily dropped it a point.
Mouthfeel: Creamy feel with some soft conditioning, yet the rather acidic lactic feel is a tad off-putting in the long run to say the least. Sour finish that is dry and unbalanced.
Drinkability: The great entrance always removed any semblance of the strange after-taste from the previous mouthful. Of course, ultimately the funny finish returns and reminds you that there is something wrong with the back end of this Stout. Struggled to justify a 3.0 here so I went with a 2.5 in my notes.
Overall: Started with a lot of promise but ultimately finished up as a below-average Stout, with a rather annoying sour lactic ending, which in itself is not that bad but here it just wasnt in the right place. Confused. I like Goose Eye beers, so Ill try it again if I see it; just to make sure I had a good sample, or rather not as the case may be.
