8oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square. One might think that 'Toasted Wheat Ale' would have been a more, um, marketable moniker, eh?
This beer appears a clear, dark cola-tinted brown colour, with one skinny finger of pale tan head, which leaves very little in the way of lace anywhere near the glass as things quickly progress.
It smells of wet ashes, bready and crackery pale malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, Wheat Thins, a hint of earthy anise spice, and very subtle leafy, musty, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy cereal malt, chalky chocolate (oh yeah), puffed wheat, a bit of acrid char, and more understated earthy, leafy, and floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-assuring frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, with just a touch of smoke getting a little too fresh with my palate here. It finishes trending dry, the toastiness presiding.
Overall - this is a pleasant enough version of the style, nice and malty and roasted. Kind of a weird thing on a hot day, but the air conditioning in this establishment is making it a whole lot easier to enjoy, even if I still feel that the name could sport a more user-friendly character.
