This is a weird one to me.
Pours more of a light brown than amber - darker than expected, which might swallow any red hues. The head is nice, off-white, and lasts through most of the beer. Lacing is moderate early, light later.
Nose is heavy on a grassy hop note, and missing the malty nature I’m used to in amber ales. Fresh cut lawn is mostly what I get, with an earthy semi-sweet malt note heavily camouflaged.
My first sip, I thought brown ale. This did evaporate, but the grass hoppiness grew from that initial taste. An earthy base - from malt and/or hops plus the grassy notes seem like mowing a lawn in the Piedmont of VA at first opportunity after a week or on-and-off rain.
A hoppy amberish-brown ale that is heavy on the grass. I was a bit baffled early, but it grew on me. I’d do a taste before diving in if you are thinking a more malty, traditional amber ale. If you like grassy hops, it’s worth a try.
