Collaboration with Mortalis Brewing Company
The first collaboration between Beer Tree Brew Co and Mortalis, this Double Neapolitan Milk Stout was brewed at Beer Tree using specially roasted Dominican cocoa nibs and chocolate malts. It was then blended with creamy milk sugar and Madagascar vanilla beans and swirled with fresh strawberries and jam.

Smells of strawberries and chocolate. Taste is very sweet. The creaminess makes up for the vanilla. I taste the strawberries upfront with a hint of chocolate. Overall needs more of a chocolate flavor but all and all good stout too sweet to drink a whole beer though. Alcohol is hidden well.

Look: Very dark brown, almost black. 3 fingers of bubbly khaki head with very long retention.
Smell: Sweet milky coffee, strawberry.
Taste: Quite sweet but not cloyingly annoying. It tastes like it says: sweet and milky, some roast coffee from the dark malt, strawberries, basically no hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Creamy smooth like a glass of milk, with mild carbonation.
Overall: Exactly what it advertises itself as, which is hard for a lot of breweries.

Poured into a tulip glass via draft @ Mohawk Tap Room (Scotia, NY)
color is midnight black
smell is milk chocolate, strawberries and vanilla bean extract
taste is sweet strawberry jam upfront, followed by creamy milk chocolate and vanilla on the backend. little to no alcohol burn
carbonation is low, mouthfeel is full and creamy
this is one heck of a pastry/desert stout..it was literally like drinking Neapolitan Ice Cream..wonderful!

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a very small head and not much lacing.
This smells like creamy vanilla, milk chocolate, strawberry purée, and a bit of fudginess.
This pretty much basically nails what they were going for. The strawberry presents itself a bit more strongly as the beer warms. There’s a decent amount of gooey marshmallow-like vanilla, and a fairly sweet chocolatey base. I realize I’m reviewing this beer by confirming the three flavors in Neapolitan ice cream, but that’s basically what we got here. Sorry for the laziness.
This is medium bodied and fairly creamy, with a great level of drinkability. There’s basically no booziness.
This fits right into Mortalis’ shtick. I wish it was maybe a little bit thicker, but the flavors work well.

From a can dated 1/16/2019 , into a 16 oz BTBC tulip.
Let warm to about 55F.
Pours opaque dark brown, with moderate dark tan head . Transparent at the edges, if held to the light.
Smell? Here is why the description above of how it was treated. Covering all the bases. ; )
A) In the glass, it smells of roasty malt, a litle char, and a bit of bitter chocolate. As it warms more cocoa is apparent. Essentially, basic stout aroma. 3.75
B) From the open can, with the remainder : chocolate liqueur, brownies, vanilla+alcohol, as with vanilla extract, or well-preserved vanilla beans. (Grandma H. used to keep 'em around. ;) ) , plus occasional hints of something vaguely fruity . 4.5 (will have to split the diference somehow) Maybe this recommends drinking from the can? Will try it in a bit.
Taste is liquid chocolate, similar to chocolate liqueur, but less sweet, just barely sweet, plus some roasty vanilla notes, such as in creme brulee (the desert, not the beer) . Something vaguely fruity/jammy , and barely tangy, in the background. Slight alcohol as would be found in liqueurs or brandy, lingering in the aftertaste, but much less so, with no warming. It is a positive feature. A trace of bitterness on the finish.
Out of the can? The only differece I can discern is a bit more of the fruity element, and slightly more carbonation. Verdict: same, & fine either way.
Feel is medium oily . Lingers on the palate, and inside of lips. A very slight alcohol burn at the back of the throat. Not unpleasant, and would guess that would decline/disappear with age. Light, very fine carbonation, that tends to only expose itself on the finish. Compliments the dark-chocolate bitterness. Just enough to let you know that it's beer, and that it's not flat.
Overall, really like this! Smooth, and dangerously easy-drinking. The flavors blend well, and probably wil get better with some age. Maybe not a knock-your-socks-off type (for the barrel-aged aficionados) but a quite well-done non-barrel-aged stout .
