Drank on tap at Five Churches Brewing Company, New Britain, CT
Served in a tulip
The oily, viscous, pitch black liquid was topped by an inch-tall, tight and creamy, tan colored crown that slowly dropped to a thick, frothy collar. A wall of patchy lacing coated the glass after each sip. By the drink’s end, the lacing transformed into a blanket of tiny droplets.
The aroma was fantastic. Super malty and robust. Nice melding of roasted and sweet caramel malts. Vanilla came through big time. High quality vanilla extract perhaps. Chocolate fudge was also apparent. Moderately sweet overall. As the beer warmed, the vanilla intensified. A milky, lactose-like quality was noticeable too.
The flavor profile was even more impressive than the nose. Huge vanilla presence. Loads of sweet caramelized sugar and brown sugar notes. Creme brûlée came to mind. Uber malty and robust. Roasted and caramel malts were noticeable. Milk and dark chocolate notes appeared in the center. More vanilla and malty sweetness on the back end and the finish. Touch of roastiness and lingering vanilla after the swallow.
Outstanding rich, dense, viscous mouthfeel. Completely full bodied for the style. This almost reminded me of a vanilla frappe. The liquid contained a super fine, moderate effervescence that fluffed up beautifully on the palate.
Five Churches have been brewing some pretty impressive beers since they opened a year and a half ago, but none I have tried even come close to this. With its amazing vanilla forward aroma and flavor profile and decadent mouthfeel, Stouty Is Still Groovin’ is on par with some of the highly sought after pastry stouts made by the big name players in the craft beer world.
