Pours with some viscosity, but overall appears rather thin with hissing carbonation fizzling out into a thin beige ring around the body of the beer.
The nose starts Brandy heavy but after giving a few minutes in the glass, notes of dried green apple accompanies caramel and hints of dry baking chocolate. Hints of vanilla bean.
The palate features a good bit of dry cocoa, clove and dried fruits. Citrus and apple come through on the forefront, while on the tail there’s a bit more sweetness akin to dates and accompanies a noticeable boozy warmth. Getting some nice smoky notes after about 20 mins in the glass.
Mouthfeel is a little thin, but has decent coating. Dry and boozy, finishing warm and a touch bitter.
I’d read conflicting reviews on this, and even as someone not particularly fond of Apple Brandy treatments, I thought this was pretty good. It could definitely use more body on the base beer to lift the barrel profile, but if anything this beer shows that they pulled it at the right time. Any longer in oak and this would’ve been toast. Definitely showed off some of the barrel room talent.
