Our first Advocator stout for the 2023-24 membership brings back one of our favorite treated stouts, with the addition of some extended barrel aging. We selected two 8-year Stagg Jr and one 7-year Weller barrel as the base, with a designed-for-barrels base stout that was brewed nearly two years ago. The Stagg Jr barrels provide a bold bourbon punch to help cut through the heavy flavor additions, while the Weller brings more of a rich, smooth character to take the edges off the more intense barrels. Peanut and coconut come through big and up front, with the brighter almonds playing support. We have been really loving the crop of vanilla beans from Comoros this year, and their rich chocolate-and-marshmallow character bring everything together in this beer.

Tar black with some visible pastry flotsam in light of no head aside from a thin, dark brown chain.

Jesus effing Snickers, Batman! Literally, from start to finish, it expresses like a Snickers blended into a whiskey BA stout.

Silky--somehow not too sticky--it's a touch warming in the swallow.

Milk chocolate, prominent nutty peanuts, a hint of vanilla-coconut, and a balanced bourbon barrel heat nose on this one! Taste follows with some milk chocolate covered peanuts and almonds upfront...and then a velvety smooth, vanilla, coconut and bourbon heat finish. Yum! I was apprehensive about this one as I am not the biggest fan of peanuts and the non-barrel aged version of this was not one of my favorites. This, however, is so well-done! The peanut notes are pretty dominant on the nose, but with the integration of the barrel and prominence of the vanilla a coconut on the palate, the peanut vibes play a supporting role....which is great! As it warms, a little more peanut flavor peeks out, but it is such a smooth drinking experience that it all works for me. Great stuff!
