Presentation: Sampled during a specially arranged Brewery Visit to La Brasserie Du Brabant on Saturday 10th April, 2004 with fellow members of Wakefield CAMRA during their annual Easter Belgium Trip.
The Brewer only had a small stash of this left, but was willing to part with a few bottles for our party of beer geeks. He hinted that this may not be brewed again, but seemed unsure as to that commitment. Served from a nicely chilled 750ml green glass bottle that was crown capped and only had a small tall thin upright 1 x 3 white label. A thin orange line border encapsulates much information whilst the label has a gray drawing of the Farm Brewery as a backdrop. Described as Bière Artisanale de fermentation haute and labeled as LAbbaye Zitti Ambrée. Listed at alc. 8° (but known to be "at least" 9% alc./vol.) it has no recommended serving temperature unlike the other labels. Best Before end 2005.
Appearance: Murky brown, a very light sedimented yeast cake quickly formed in the bottom of my Goblet as I chatted to others. A light tan expanded head looked great at first, but it soon rescinded to a uniform covering of about a ½ which relaxed quite early in the game. Cloudy and somewhat deadly looking.
Nose: Strong dark malts, some spices and a light smidgeon of cloves and black pepper. The nose is very inviting, exotic almost. The alcohol is there throughout, powerfully directing the nasal traffic.
Taste: Wow! This is a very large beer. Lots of malts; roasted & toasted with some light burnt toast character at times. Spicy at first, peppery in the finish with some Cloves to lighten up the middle. A powerful beer with strong flavors.
Mouthfeel: Definitely the biggest part of this beer next to the tastes is its mouthfeel. The unfiltered body quite literally leaves nothing out of the experience. Like liquid bread this fills the mouth with a decadent mix of powerful malts and spices that you want to chew at times. This can definitely be labeled as a foodstuff.
Drinkability: Quite a powerful brew that has strong spices and thick dark malts. These tend to make this one a heavy offering and more of a sipping beer. The 25cl I had was more than enough during our brief visit, and Im glad that this was one of the last beers sampled albeit at around 11:30am!!!
Overall: More like a "Double Ambrée", oh dear, there goes my US influence again! This is a very big beer, that was not best suited to a 10:30am Brewery Tour when we had the whole day in front of us, maybe my Review unfairly reveals that. I would dearly love to try this again, but later on a night though as I suspect that this beer reveals more of its charm and can withstand strong foods and the flavor remnants of several previous beers quite well. If Brasserie Du Brabant does indeed cease brewing this at some point, then I may sadly never find out if I was a little unfair with this one.
