Presentation: Sampled during a specially arranged Brewery Visit to La Brasserie Du Brabant on Saturday 10th April, 2004 with fellow members of Wakefield CAMRA during their annual Easter Belgium Trip.
Served from a nicely chilled 750ml green glass bottle, with only a large home made rectangular black and white landscape orientated label held that held any clue to its contents. Labeled as La Brabançonne Bière Brune Spéciale. Listed at 9.1%/Vol.
Appearance: A thick looking, murky dark brown body that was dredged up from the latter third of a 75cl bottle. A light tan head has incredible staying power and leaves some fantastic looking lacing. Classic looks.
Nose: Dark malts with a hint of some light spices, maybe from the yeast. Hints of the high alcohol are present but not invasive. Bold odors.
Taste: A solid thick Brune, some lovely toasted malts with a light chocolate feel and a delicate roasted finish in the back end. Finishes with an aniseed like bitterness that rasps the tongue.
Mouthfeel: The 9.1% alcohol lends a huge feel to this Brune. The finely attenuated and small bubbled carbonation gives a very smooth feel in the mouth. Bold malts and strong alcohol give this Brune a serious backbone.
Drinkability: Heavy at times but nevertheless, this is a nice beer that drinks rather well when slowly savored.
Overall: Not filtered or pasteurized. The unfiltered appearance and home-made style black & white bottle label should be disregarded for this is a quality Brune. A relative newcomer to the Belgium beer scene, but not one to be over-looked if you see it.
