A rich stout brewed with lactose, coffee, and vanilla.

If you wanted to enjoy a cold beverage in the heat of summer before power came to Sylvan Lake in 1932, chances are you’d have been a patron of Bill and Flo Brown’s ice cutting business. Using a buzz saw and a small horsepower motor, the Browns cut blocks of ice from the frozen lake in winter, stored them in sawdust, and delivered them door-to-door in wooden boxes from the 3/4 ton truck.

A- Pours a standard deep dark brown cola color, and appears to have a fizzy thin carbonation, as the head, which is dark toffee in color, starts off impressively about two fingers in thickness and swiftly dissipates into literally nothingness, leaving a clear, foam free top. There is also a non existent lacing feature, only leaving behind a watery looking film around the inside of the glass....nothing here to see folks!

S- This department is better, with enticing aromas of dark chocolate, mocha coffee, vanilla bean extract, burnt toffee infused cream, Dulce de Leche, and a finish that is of muted char, Earth and astringent grainy dryness. The lactose sweetness is noted throughout, and I notice that as this warms, the coffee aspect really starts to intensify.

T- This is quite a sweet, delectable treat of a milk/sweet stout! The vanilla really shines though immediately, along with coffee, vanilla coffee mate flavored coffee, chocolate....both milk and dark, Earthy char, burnt almond, dark toffee/caramel/blackstrap molasses and a lingering finish that is of vanilla creme truffle.....rich and sweet overall!

M/O- Fairly thin in body, and the carbonation is pretty smooth. Overall this is an easy drinking stout that is sweet and dessert like. I do like it, but am over it after one pint.....it could provide a nice compliment to a chocolate cake slice or a chocolate mousse dessert....overall I like it and would enjoy this one again, however, the protein content needs to change, as I would like to see some sort of lingering foamy head. Cheers!
