On draught at the brewery. It pours mahogany with deep cola hues when held to the light. The modest, light mocha-colored cap dissipated quickly leaving only a thin sheen of lacing inside the glass. On the nose there is roasted malt, burnt coffee, dark chocolate, and a whiff of tobacco smoke. Its taste largely follows the nose - in a good way: there are burnt coffee grounds, bakers chocolate, tobacco, earthy char and burnt nuts. It's slightly acidic - like good New Jersey diner coffee. The mouthfeel is moderately thick and creamy with a low level of carbonation, and the 9% ABV is quite well hidden. Overall, this is a really well-brewed, basic American Stout without adjuncts. It's easy to drink despite the alcohol level. Its whole exceeds the sum of its parts. The brewer told me they do a barrel-aged version that I will look for.
