Rustic, charming and slightly unrefined, the brewers at St. Arnulf Alery applies the imperialization of ale to a hop forward, Brittish styled flavor. Complexly fruity, bitter and with a touch of earth, Gellen is a throwback to a more historic way to think about imperial IPA.
Rusty amber and with an overcast of haze, the colors of golden and burnt orange shine though. Its scant froth rolls onto the nose with an herbal, earthy and stone fruit medley. Its taste is biscuity sweet with a rich caramel and toffee complement taking the impression of poundcake.
A hop forward balance shifts the focus of flavor from malt to hops gradually over the middle palate. Malt richness plays off of the natural esters of apple, fig, apricot and bruised orange for a taste of marmalade that precedes the hop flavor of grapefruit, lemon and orange. Herbal with a grassy, leafy and stemmy balance with a spicy balance of peppercorn and woodsiness. Earthen hints of fresh pulled tobacco and fennel tie into the fruit and bitterness as the late palate pulls slightly ahead with bitter resins.
Piney and honey-like its hoppy tilt is slight as the full bodied beer lingers on the palate with tobacco, tea and mild leather-like taste. Its spicy alcohol carries a vodka-like sharpness with the taste of macerated stone fruits continue waves of esters on the after palate.
