What's old is new again. St. Arnulf Alery honors the traditional sweet stout but owes it to new technology, new ingredients and new techniques to pull the style into the current craft beer climate with newer and more exotic hops.

Bombastus simply pours like tar. Carrying a viscous, opaque black and topped with a dense mocha stained blanket of foam, the stout swoons the nose with decadent roast, lavish brown sugars and subtle hints of tropical fruit. Unapologetically sweet on the tongue, the beer lays a rich collection of molasses, toffee and brown sugars on the tastebuds in saturating fashion.

Traveling across the middle palate, a thick coat of sugars roll over the tongue, carrying with it a robust taste of espresso, milk chocolate, black walnut and burnt toast. As the roasted flavors relax slightly, a deep caramel flavor comes with a mild suggestion of pineapple, orange, grapefruit and red grape to frame the taste of the seldom seen "tropical" stout.

Light bitterness seems coffee-like as the full bodied stout lingers on the after palate with caramel sweetened espresso. Kahlua and cream keep the dessert-like flavors at the forefront of taste with a slow simmer of coffee and chocolate liqueur. The sweet tooth never saw it coming.
