Sweets: Cherry Chocolate Sour Ale
Mountains Walking Brewing
Date: 26 April 2021
Shifting to a different brewery to finish my night off. Thus far, what I have consumed from Mountains Walking has been stellar and well-made. The temperature is around 46 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The pour created a creamy and foamy pink head with excellent retention. The slow dissipation left bits of fruit on the glass. The color is dark reddish maroon and is opaque.

The aromas are cherries, chocolate, vanilla, toasted bread, molasses, and fruity tartness.

I taste tart cherries, a hint of lemons, bittersweet chocolate, toasted crackers, vanilla, and dark brown sugar.

The mouthfeel is thick and tarty.

The body is heavy, has medium carbonation, and has a lasting finish.

The cherry and chocolates permeated the air as I was pouring the beer. My mouth begins to salivate. The chocolate is not overbearing. The tarts work well in this sour. Another stellar beer from Mountains Walking.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a very hazy raspberry red color with a tiny fizzy head of off white, lightly pink tinted foam. The head fades super-fast leaving just a trace of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell - Wow! While it looks like it should smell mainly of cherries, the aroma is huge of milk chocolate and vanilla bean smell, giving a very rich smell to it overall. At the same time there are light notes of cherry and a rather moderate showing of a tart green apple smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a rather tart cherry flavor that has a good deal of apple cider vinegar and green apple. Upfront, there is little detection of the chocolate or the vanilla, but as the taste advances flavors of milk chocolate, crème and vanilla al develop on the tongue. At the same time the green apple gets even stronger, and with a bit of a surge of some creaminess and vanilla at the very end, one is left with a very sour cherry and tart green dessert apple like taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The brew is actually somewhat more chewy and thick with a carbonation level that is light and fizzy. Overall, the odd mix of sour fruit and milk chocolate/vanilla actually goes rather well, making for a nice slow sipping brew.
Overall - I am usually not a big sour fan, and thought the combination of flavors in this one would be off, but this I actually really liked. Interesting and very well done!!
