Super happy to imbibe this beer. I recently received this beer from the brewery. I poured the beer at 46 degrees into my Jester King glass. A frothy and creamy one-fingered head with above average retention. The slow dissipation left some lacing on the glass, mostly a ring. The color of the beer charts around SRM 38; dark used oily brown with no clarity. The appearance of the beer is standard for this style.
Ripe berries, cinnamon, coffee, and sweet bread are the first aromas. Nosing further, I detect maple, alcohol, yeasty crackers, a hint of floral, molasses, raisins, tobacco, and earthiness. Several more whiffs produced just a few aromas; chocolate, milk, and a touch of char.
Coffee, chocolate, maple, and berries are the dominant flavors. Sipping and swirling, I notice earthiness, raisins, cinnamon, sweet bread, crackers, yeasty, subtle char, molasses, and floral.
The mouthfeel is warming and coating. The body is medium, has medium carbonation, and has a long finish.
I am somewhat surprised by this beer. Usually, the pastry stout is incredible, and the alcohol is hidden. The cinnamon outshines the rest of the ingredients. I wanted more balance with the other flavors. The coffee kinda hides, and the berries are just about perfect. I am on the fence; it has the potential to be great.
