I am drinking Hansel's Delight today using a tulip glass. I served it at 48 degrees. A motor oil thick pour created an airy, creamy, three-fingered dark tan head with above-average retention. The color is dark brown, nearly black, charting around SRM 38. The somewhat slow dissipation tatted lace on the glass. The overall appearance is above average for this style.
The initial aromas are dark chocolate, coconut, and a hint of char. Swirling the glass and nosing again, I detect bready, cake, brown sugar, caramel, toasted grains, and alcohol. The stout has one note: I am not smelling the depth I am used to in stouts.
I am not tasting any off-flavors; I probably should not have kept this in my cellar this long. However, the chocolate cake flavors are flat. Sure, there is chocolate, coconut, char, a hint of Maillard, burnt sugar, and bready. Yet I want more rounded flavors with this stout. The flavors are lackluster, like the aromas. Generally, stouts have bold, profound tastes and aromas, but I am not getting any of that.
When I saw the thick motor oil pour, I looked forward to a thick, chewy stout. I did not get a sticky, thick stout. The mouthfeel was warming and slightly astringent. The body was medium, and the carbonation was medium low.
Overall, I was not impressed with this beer. I try hard not to tear beers apart. I want to understand what the brewer is doing and if they are following the style guidelines. Stouts are one of my favorite beers. The best thing about this beer is it is not cloyingly sweet. The worst part is everything else. I have nearly drank most of the beer, working it over on my palate to understand it. This is a stout I will not return to.
