a rich and roasty robust porter, one of the better beers i had in here both from a technical standpoint and from a depth of flavor perspective. its near black from the tap with a super frothy almost nitro looking mocha brown head, dense but clean looking, with a strong roasty aroma, bitter and almost burnt dark barley, really hits the low end well. subtle dark chocolate for baking, fresh cigar, and wet soil. its deep in the flavor too, not burnt or smoked at all, but just about, the black roasted barley really is the driver here. i like that the middle was kept sort of minimal, a lot of times its swollen with caramel malts in an attempt to balance the bitterness coming at the end, but here no such effort is made, and it leaves a grainy, dry, mellow center that sets up all the roast intensity at the end really well. its not overly complex, but its really well built. the yeast flashes english for a second but isnt really there at the end, more of that might be better, but i like the sort of straightforward and simple nature of this porter, and reckon its a fine example of the style and appealing in all seasons. very well done beer.
