this is wonderful beer, a combination of two great things that are super cohesive but are rarely seen together for whatever reason, a solid marzen as a core here, jazzed up with locally roasted coffee, another good one from buried acorn, innovative too, not sure why everyone is syracuse is not as high on them as i am. a little darker than most of these obviously with some coffee blended in, i assume a cold brew into finished beer, but im not sure the process here. the nose is awesome, some dry and bitter cocoa to the coffee, a hint of smoke and raisin too, nice with the richer munich malts in this, and with the bready lager yeast, which is bold enough to push through the coffee and the grain and keep this authentically german, which i think is a huge key to why this is so good, its old world build is evident. the coffee is killer in the flavor, its fresh and bold, there right with the hearty malt and light caramelized sweetness, hints of almond, honey, hazelnut, and dark chocolate swirl, deeply earthy and autumnal, but also sort of cozy and warming, but then also refreshing and crushable for what it is, i think owing to the finsihing dryness and the mineral profile, the texture is as good as the flavor. good water chemisty, nice carbonation, clean on the ferment but without giving up the yeast character that is so important in a quality marzen, and the quality of the coffee also seems high, not overly roasted, and well dosed. this is clever and well executed and delicious, definitely an all day beer right here, pefect for this time of year, and oddly compatible with spicy food. a joy to drink!
