A challenge to brew but a pleasure to drink, the Pilsner Project was created to highlight the nuanced flavors of German-grown hops balanced alongside a seasonally inspired malt character. Brewed a handful of times per year, each batch is designed with a featured hop to allow for a full expression of its flavor. A true passion project, we hope you enjoy these Pilsners as much as we enjoy making them.

Hallertau Saphir is known for being pleasantly spicy, with fruity, tangerine overtones.

L: The beer pour a straw to pale gold color with good clarity. The pour results in two fingers of frothy white head with good retention slowly falling to a 5mm ring around the circumference of the glass with a less substantial sheet inhabiting the interior. As the beer recedes in the glass it leaves a succession of substantial rings of lace.

S: Light Malty-sweet character exhibiting notes of honey bread crust, herbal notes of fresh cut hay, delicate notes of noble hop spice, and a light note of citrus.

T: Definitely getting the prominent tangerine note others have mentioned as well as a light note of bitter citrus pith. I also get fresh cut grass and a nice light spiciness. The malt bill plays a supporting role exhibiting just the right amount of bready-sweetness to balance the spicy bitterness coming from the hops.

F: Light bodied with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is nice and smooth with just a bit of prickly carbonation on the backend before a minimal dryness on the finish. I wanted a bit more dryness and the lack thereof negatively impacted the drinkability for me.

O: Really nice single hop offering from the folks at East Rock. I always enjoy when brewers create single hop beers as it has really helped me learn the hops from a drinkers perspective and also to understand what hops contribute to the nose and palate. Anyways this is a really good beer that expertly showcases the Saphir hop with a nice minimalistic malt bill. Highly recommended!

Poured from a 16oz can stamped BEST BY 01.10.23 to a Pils glass at fridge temp.
The body is a clear light gold. A puffy pure white head floats above, but fades in just a few minutes, however lacing is impressive until the end.
The aroma is fresh cut grass, sweet bready yeast and a mild citrus background.
The taste is surprisingly bitter. The front of the swig is sweet and grassy but it almost instantly dries out to some nice bitter and crisp action. Hoppiness stays on the tongue long after the swallow.
The mouthfeel is clean and refreshing, not a hint of oiliness and it has ample carbonation.
A really nice beer.
