East Rock Lite Bier is our take on a German-style Leichtbier, or light beer. This remarkably pale and crisp golden lager is brewed with a blend of imported Pilsner and spitz malt and cold-hopped during fermentation with Saphir hops. Gown by Seitz Farm in the Hallertau region of Germany, the Saphir hops used in this recipe impart a spicy, herbal nuance and subtle hint of tangerine and lemon peel. At 4.2% ABV and 120 calories per 12 oz. serving, Lite Bier is our lightest and lowest calorie beer to date.

L: The beer pours a pale straw color with a minimal chill haze. The pour results in two fingers of fine, white head that falls to a 3mm ring around the glass with a less substantial splotchy sheet inhabiting the interior of the glass. As the beer goes down it leaves a very light spotty lacing interspersed with light rings of lace.

S: Light herbal notes, a hint of citrus pith, and a very light grainy malt character.

T: Light notes of lemon pith, light herbal character in the form of fresh cut grass, and a very light grainy sweetness. The grainy sweetness is cut by some bitter hop character leaving no residual sweetness.

F: Very light body with medium-high carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth, but very thin and on first drink almost less substantial than water, and the finish has a light dryness.

O: Very nice session beer which can also double as a beach/lawnmower beer. I really like the nose and palate, but the insubstantial mouthfeel holds this one back from true greatness. Recommended.
