16oz can
Pours a nice two finger white head into my willi becher glass. Retention is ok, maybe a little above average, leaves a little layer of foam sitting on top. Initial lacing looks pretty nice. Body is a darker than normal orange, pretty clear, with a medium amount of bubbles coming up. Looks good so far.
Nose is noticeably un minerally, pretty wet for a German pils. Sweeter, and a little breadier than I’m used to, touch of caramel. Noble hops. I don’t mind this at all, I’ve actually been getting tired of drinking super attenuated pilsners. While not what I’ve come to expect, I think this is still in the spectrum of the style. Overall pretty good.
Flavor is definitely richer than normal, noticeably malty. For this reason the hop profile is somewhat subdued, actually to a pretty considerable level considering it’s not THAT malty. Still pretty crisp and refreshing, sugars aren’t cloying. Very straight forward, clean. Overall it’s nice, not exactly sure how I feel about it though.
Mouthfeel is a nice change from the norm. Drinks arguably smoother than a normal pils, albeit just slightly less refreshing. Body is relatively light, but certainly carries a little weight from the fuller grains. Pretty balanced, which is also not common here. Bitterness is not very prominent. Carbonation is medium, also lower than normal, but it probably plays better with the smoother body. Overall good, different.
Drinkability is great, it’s balanced and clean.
Appearance turned out pretty nice. Lacing was a little web-like, but overall pretty cohesive.
Overall a more south German example, than north. Sweet, less hoppy, smoother. Drinks a lot different, has some marzen qualities in the fuller grains, even pulls remnants of an ale with its balance. Malts come out even more as it warms and are pretty lovely at some points, but it sacrifices a lot of hop flavor and makes me question if this is stylistically too much in one direction.

Canned 05 Feb.
A mildly hazy yellow, glowing, with a dense white head that falls off quickly leaving little lacing. The nose is initially sharp with a metallic edge, but this quickly turns to a soft, doughy, mildly bready pilsner. The hops are delicately fruity and with a definite Meyer lemon sharp sweetness, with a blend of zest and bruised mint. A mild sugar syrup note is present as well.
The palate opens mildly sweet and doughy, with a blend of delicately floral honey, a little supple grain and again, a bit of sweetness. The hops follow, mildly fruity but not particularly bright. A mild bitterness is present, clean, continental and quite appealing. Mildly sweet and a little grainy , this beer is creamy and soft on the palate. Carbonation is mild. Good stuff, though it seems closer to a kellerpils.
