Bought at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam Feb 2012 – held one yr before reviewed. Serie nr: 635

Pours a beautiful dark brown that looks totally black in the glass. A frothy 2 finger dark tan head crowns the beer. Smells of deep roasted malts and dark ripe fruits dominate the nose. First sip is super tasty with a clean malt forward taste loaded with overly roasted malts but not to a fault. Fig notes add to the flavor that finishes with a beautiful bitterness loaded with chocolate and a splash of coffee. Though rather thin in mouthfeel it is somehow creamy and that is most welcomed. The 8.8% ABV is well hidden. Very nice brew indeed!

Got this one at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Apparently this brewery is trying to make a comeback. Here's hoping for the best.

From a bottle into a snifter
IBU: 60
Series Nr. 595

APPEARANCE: A dark brown, almost black pour makes a two finger, medium looking, tan head with good retention. Black body with no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a good wisp and leaves sheets of lacing down the sides. A good wisp remains until the end and leaves some nice lacing down the glass. Pretty good looking stout.

SMELL: Milder nose. Roasted malts, molasses, and dark chocolate in there. Some liquorice and smoky notes as well. Quite nice, but slightly too mild. It does liven up as it sits, however.

TASTE: Roasted malts, smoky notes, some sweet molasses, and bitter chocolate and espresso at the finish. A very bitter finish indeed. A big, bold and lingering aftertaste is roasted and smoky, with lots of bitter chocolate and espresso. More bitter than the 60 IBUs would suggest. Quite good.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Slightly lighter on the palate than hoped, goes down smooth, a little airy as well, and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Needs to be a little thicker with more weight to be truly supportive.

OVERALL: A pretty good brew. Lots of good flavor on this one, with a good look to it as well. The nose needs a to be a little more outgoing and the palate needs beefing up, but as it is, the brew is still and enjoyable one to drink. One I can definitely see myself enjoying again. Good stuff guys. Recommended.
