8oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square, probably because of the Beerfest going on in Edmonton over the weekend, and this brewery's attendance.
This beer appears a hazy, dark, cola-tinted brown colour, with one skinny finger of weakly foamy and bubbly beige head, which leaves some decent defrosting back windshield pattern lace around the glass as things march ever forward.
It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, some earthy nuttiness, muddled domestic citrus flesh, and some laid-back leafy, weedy, and piney green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, wet bar-top nuts, an apple and orange blended fruitiness, mild yeasty notes, and more earthy, musty, and dead floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is average in its workaday frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and mostly smooth, with just a touch of hop acridity maybe not toeing the company line here. It finishes trending dry, the hops exhibiting some late game, lingering moxie.
Overall - this appears to subscribe to the new school idea of hoppy without the bitter, for the most part. Not bad, but I was looking for a smack across the palate, and I did not find that, but I'm sure that y'all's mileage will vary.
