Zenit is a pale 11 plato Czech Lager (Světlý Ležák) inspired by smaller Moravian breweries in the East of the Czech Republic that carry on the pristine Czech brewing tradition with a little more independence and rustic charm. Brewed with floor-malted Bohemian Pilsner malt and a dash of Munich malt - hopped with choice Saaz and Hallertau Mittelfrüh. Layers of straw and cereal malt goodness are matched by a spicy and lively floral hop snap and a clean, citrus peel bitterness.

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. This can was contract brewed by Urban Chestnut in St. Louis.

Appearance: pale golden hue with a light-to-moderate haze and a thick head of frothy ivory foam atop.

Smell: nicely malty aroma with a moderate sweetness, a little bit of graininess, and even perhaps just a little bit of a sweet corn type aroma in there. Not bad at all.

Taste: malt has a somewhat sweet and rather soft quality, though there's hints of that graininess there. The hops are kind of grassy and noble in character, with a light bitterness that is definitely present but doesn't have the bite of a pilsner. I actually quite like it.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a big carbonation and a very nice creaminess.

Overall: a really solid Czech pale lager. It's not common to see this style here in the US, but I think this is the best example I've had outside Czechia.

From Good Times Oakland, canned/best by P1261?

Pours a clear ish pale gold with a huge head of foam, retention is great, lacing looks excellent as well.

The smell is noble hops, citrus, some grain, spicy aromas from the hops.

The taste is spicy, noble hops, toasted and grain malt, light with the latter, has a freshness to it that impresses me greatly.

Lovely mouthfeel, I would certainly drink this again. It's top notch.

Poured into a Reuben's Brew pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a half finger white head that dissipates to a thick cap with nice lacing. Aroma of bready and lightly biscuit malt, grassy and floral hops, wildflower hay, crackers, and light apple juice. Flavor is grainy and bready malt, grassy and floral hops, wild flower hay, fresh biscuit, hints of apple and pear; moderate grassy bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A pleasant domestic take on the Czech pale style. Solid grainy malt and a quite nice floral element to the otherwise classic noble hop bill. A fine hoppy lager that is largely authentic tasting.

A: Pours a very slightly hazy pale golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and moderate lemon yellow + straw yellow + bright yellow colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense sudsy foamy bright white head that slowly reduces to a handful of medium sized patches of thick film surrounded by a large patch of slightly mottled thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of biscuit + cereal grain malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. Light to moderate aromas of herbal + spicy + floral hops. Light aromas of lager yeast.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of biscuit + cereal grain malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by light flavors of lager yeast. Finally there are light to moderate flavors of herbal + spicy + floral hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which does not linger and leaves a relatively clean finish.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly crisp upfront with a slightly soft mid-body and a relatively clean finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a pleasantly crisp + clean mouthfeel with a hint of softness mid-body. Enjoyable flavors and aromas with classic hop profile.

Look: It pours yellow with very good clarity. It has a white head with very good head retention.

Smell: The aroma is malty and cereal like with a bit of spiciness.

Taste: The maltiness is on the sweet side with a cereal like flavor. There are herbal qualities with spiciness.

Feel: It has a medium light body with a nice crisp finish.

Overall, a nice refreshing beer that I would like to have on a cool evening by an outdoor fire.
