Double Barrel Hemlock (Bourbon/Madeira 2023), Barrel Aged American Barleywine 12% - Hemlock is our American Style Barleywine concocted with a few mashes full of mostly Maris Otter along with some crystal, dark Belgian caramel malts, and an extended boil. For 2023, we took a portion of our 2021 batch and aged it in a Knob Creek 12 Year Bourbon Barrel for 18 months. We then transferred into a freshly dumped imported Madeira cask for another 6 months. Double Barrel Hemlock is thick and boozy with huge notes of bourbon soaked dried fruit, plum raisin, toffee, caramel, and a killer slightly tart grape musk note. Drink at 45 Degrees.

Poured at fridge temp, but I let this one warm in the glass for a little bit. Pours a murky/muddy brown with minimal head. The Madeira barrels are evident immediately on the nose. Bread, raisins, plums, wine, and maraschino cherry. Not picking up any of the typical American barleywine characteristics, and I don't really get any bourbon.
The taste is really nice. Wow. Raisins, red wine, oak, floral, slight toffee, honey, brown sugar, candy sweetness. I would not call this an American barleywine, at least in terms of the traditional sense. No hop presence at all. I do start to pick up some bourbon notes - a hint of vanilla is there. Not boozy at all. Easy drinking.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is a sweet wine. Overall, fantastic beer that nice showcases the Madeira barrel.

Sampling a cellar temp and pouring into my trusty snifter. The beer pours a light chestnut, but rests a much deeper mahogany in the glass. A dense creamy beige head of just about .5 cm foams up and sticks around for most of the sampling. This foam fades to almost nothing before my glass is empty.
Aroma on this beer is some roasted malt and dark fruit, a good dose of brown sugar and bourbon too. I also get a some slight oak and sort of a tannin scent. No real hop presence and not fusol booze either.
First sip reveals a medium body and very smooth texture. Mild carbonation adds to the drinkability of this beer.
Flavor is toasted malts and some bourbon with a hint of dark fruit and brown sugar. I do get some light charred barrel note here too. I had to look up madeira wine as I dont drink much wine, but the burnt sugar flavor fits the profile and I definitely get a little of that. No warmth, no fusol notes and no black pepper. This beer hides its ABV well.
Im very glad to have tried this one and would gladly drink another bottle!
