Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours pitch black with a light brown head. Smells of bright coffee, nice and inviting. Tastes of dark roasted grain and coffee. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

Jet black with a dark brown head with good retention and lacing, this looks good. The nose is a really rich and robust with dark grain, a little cocoa and coffee, grainy bitterness and oodles of toasted and mildly burnt malts. The first whiff really does confirm the inspiration for this beer. A robust, roasted malt character, not unlike what you'd find in a good schwarzbier, is present. The palate opens with a nice blend of grainy bitterness and herbal, hoppy bitterness. Mint, earth, a touch of pine are present to go with toasted husk, mildly charred malt and the bitterness that goes with it. The mid palate is just a hair watery, but otherwise, this beer is surprisingly robust for a 4.3% beer. Drying, pleasantly bitter with a blend of char and cocoa and chicory, this beer is light in body and moderately carbonated. quite excellent.
