Bourbon Barrel Aged Treaty from Vista Brewing. One 16.9 fl oz bottle, picked up at Spec’s on DeZavala, SAT, 06/11/24, $ 10.26 (Including tax), $ 0.61/fl oz. Reviewed 12/11/24 (Review 3392). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on bottom of label in near-microscopic print “RELEASE DATE DEC 2023”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 54.8 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 60.8 degrees F.
Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), light barely penetrates but shows up amber.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, same except at the edges where light barely penetrates – amber.
Head: Average (Maximum 3.4 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, medium density. Quickly collapsing to a 0.4 cm crown and a thin, complete cap.
Lacing – Fair – low mountains of near-microscopic bubbles.
Aroma – 3 – Weak chocolate and weaker bourbon - no yeast, no hops, no malt, no distinct barrel. No ethanol (8.1 % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 3.5 – Follows the nose – initially bitter but sweetening as it rests in my mouth, and bourbon flavor strengthens but never dominates; chocolate has lessened. No yeast, no hops. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Initially, brutal gastric burning but this slowly fades.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium; almost creamy; soft but lively carbonation.
Style: Follows the style guidelines, as loosely condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Overall, a bit thin for the style and the initial bitterness may be a bit much, but as it breathes and warms, it smooths out a bit.

Pours a fizzy foamy brownish 1/2 finger head with med retention, a little lacing, dark opaque almost black color

Nose very chocolatey, a bit of dark chocolate, cocoa, cocoa cereal, roast and coffee, high roast that borders acrid, a touch of that spicy yeasty continued fermentation

Taste starts with more chocolate, dark chocolate, cocoa, semi sweet, etc, again that cocoa-chocolate breakfast cereal, biscuity, fair roast with some mild acrid notes, roasted coffee, acidity, a touch burnt roasty, creamy oatmeal, light vanilla oak and spice, and a touch of that metallic spicy yeasty continued fermentation but not a lot, then a buttery flavor hard to tell if barrel or diacetyl but given the circumstances I'm thinking the latter, semi sweet finish, med bitterness

Mouth is med to fuller bod, fair creamy, carb is way higher than it should be due to the continued fermentation, hint of warming alcohol

Overall meh, first of all the metallic spicy yeasty character from fermenting in the bottle too long, roast and mild acrid notes got a bit overboard and not enough creamy base for a good oatmeal stout, and where's the barrel? there's almost no barrel at all
