Whiskey Barrel Aged Fireside from Vista Brewing. One 16.9 fl oz bottle, picked up at Spec’s on DeZavala, SAT, 06/11/24, $ 15.72 (Including tax), $ 0.93/fl oz. Reviewed 11/11/24 (Review 3391). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on bottom of label in near-microscopic print “RELEASE DATE NOV 2021”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 52.7 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 59.7 degrees F.
Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), light barely penetrates but shows up amber.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, same except at the edges where light barely penetrates - icteric at the upper and lower edges.
Head: Small (Maximum 0.8 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, medium density. Quickly collapsing to a 0.5 mm bubble ring, and no cap.
Lacing – None: as expected at 12% ABV.
Aroma – 3 – Weak chocolate and whiskey - no yeast, no hops, no malt, no distinct barrel. No ethanol (12 % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 3.25 – Follows the nose – slightly sweet and stronger whiskey flavor; chocolate has lessened. No yeast, no hops. Weak oak barrel. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Moderate gastric warming occurs.
Palate – 3 – Medium; almost creamy; soft but lively carbonation.
Style: Follows the style guidelines, as loosely condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 3.25 Three years old and distinctly mellow – easy drinking but not particularly flavorful.

Pours a fizzy small brown head with lower retention, a bit of lacing, decent legs, jet black color
Nose is nice, dark chocolate and rich cocoa malts, a bit biscuity, cookie dough, nougat, caramel, a little mocha java, some barrel notes with baking spices and a little vanilla, hint of whiskey, faint licorice, burnt honey and marshmallow, a touch nutty
Taste starts with a flash of dark fruits like a little chocolate covered raisin, quickly into the dark malts but not too much, a little roast, plenty of cocoa, burnt marshmallow and nougat, dark chocolate cookie dough, a bit nutty, mocha java, cocoa spice, some barrel with a bit more baking spices, very light whiskey, vanilla notes, a little creamy milk chocolate, mild bitterness, smooth alcohol notes, a touch of a smokey note late, almost Mexican chocolate with cinnamon like spice and cocoa, semi sticky sweet finish
Mouth is fuller bod, med bubbly carb, light warming alcohol
Overall pretty nice, much better than the last beer I had, so I think this redeemed them. I do wish the barrel was a bit stronger, but otherwise nice.
