not bad, and more than anything i am excited to see the continuation of new beers coming out from these guys after what felt like a kind of long period of stagnation. we found this on tap, and the malt depth is easy to appreciate, even if the lagering itself lacks a brisk and snappy character i like in the best of these, i think they did a pretty good job with this, its drinkable, likes salty food, and has just a bit more grain robustness than a lot of them. deep bronze colored, redder than anticipated, clearish, with a short but lasting half inch of white head, sudsy and lathered up looking. the nose and taste deliver caramelized malt richness beyond the norm, with an almost english as much as german breadiness to it, toasty and warming, hearty and more late season and wintery vibes to me, festbier types in august, this sort of thing now. the hops are light, the yeast is out of the way too but not invisible, and it does have some german character to the ferment, much as its malted over and still kind of sweet on the back end. its not as heavy as it looks to drink, has a wet stone sort of mineral composition, and sticks to the ribs a little bit without being in any way overwhelming. a bit stronger too than most. i think its a pretty distinctive take on the style, a touch filling and under carbonated, but with lots to like as the weather gets colder. i hope these guys keep the new stuff coming!

Half pour at Woodland Empire. Dark, clear amber, small off-white head. Malty aroma, toffee, leather. Taste is dark bread, malty. Pretty dark for a fest ier.
