For this beer we wanted to both brew, and illustrate something with multiple layers of depth. We wanted to build a flavor profile that would initially present itself one way and then metamorphose into something later in the drinking experience. Kind of like a “gotcha” moment, where you think you know what’s going on, and then someone or something reveals itself to you as totally different and new… but in a cool and extremely pleasant way.

Dry hopped with Citra, Galaxy and Riwaka this beer drinks at first as a citric delight, which as it warms moves toward a more tropical, pineapple laden profile. It’s a delightful drinking experience start to finish!

2023 rendition. Purchase from Durand. Canned June 28, 2023. Served cool into a chalice. This likely deserves a separate review as this likely changed year to year.

Appearance - Super turbid hazy yellowy white brew with a big three finger head due to an aggressive pour. Great foaminess and impressive staying power. Great curtain of lacing left behind too.

Smell - Some dank weediness, lots of mango and a helping of pineapple with some fresh lychee thrown in, the nose is top notch.

Taste - Tropical and sweet with plenty of mango coming through and to a lesser extent pineapple. Some weedy hop oils with good bitterness in the back end. Booze is very well hidden.

Mouthfeel - Super smooth and creamy, carbonation is light and this beer is pretty juicy, with just a bit of the the astringency of the hop oils coming out at the close.

Overall - Honestly, maybe I'm just thirsty but the 2023 rendition of behind the mask, might just be the best IPA I've had from Badlands, and there's been an ever increasing amount of them in recent months. Top notch all the way.

Enjoyed a fresh June 15th batch which offered a classic Badlands mustard pour with good collar. Soft grassy nose with hints of citrus. Layered for sure with Galaxy prominent in first sip. The can suggested warming slowly so I did which did reveal more citrus notes later as advertised. A nice addition.
