This past fall we had the great pleasure of being able to travel to Yakima and select hops. Hops are, to put it mildly, extremely important to the production of hoppy beer, and it’s no secret we produce quite a lot of hoppy beer, making hops all the more important to us and our brewery.
This year we selected for the varietal Idaho 7. This is one of the most underrated hops in our opinion. It is unabashedly intense in its display of aroma and flavor and it delivers huge ruby red grapefruit, tropical fruit notes. It comes with some amount of bitterness to deliver that intensity, but it is 110% worth the ride!

This underperformed. Initial sweetness and hops led to a vegetable finish. So a bit of off flavour developed with this treatment of hops. Still quaffable, credit to extra malt.

The first Select beer I tried during Badlands' Select event.
Pours pale yellow, with a nice nose of wood and citrus tones.
The wood is more prominent in the body, but I found the beer wanting. The bouquet just didn't satisfy. Still better than any mass market beer, but these youngsters can do way better than this.
