Pours black with a finger of caramel colored foam. Gives some oily legs when the glass is swirled, confirming the ABV and thickness.
Aroma is maple syrup, vanilla bean, molasses, and toffee on top of thick roasty and toasty malts. Barrel and bourbon round it out, giving it a little extra oomph at the end without swelling the heat out of proportion. Despite being north of 15% ABV, it does not smell like alcohol, nor is the nose exceedingly warm. Maple syrup is a really great touch, giving it just a little initial sweetness without clinging to the note excessively.
Flavor profile is along the same path - thick roasty and toasty malts support maple syrup and vanilla bean, along with bourbon and barrel. Maple syrup and vanilla bean are a little more sweet here, especially as the beer warms. Alcohol refrains from becoming excessive in taste, molding into the surroundings well. It has a warm rise at close, but is never 'hot'. Chocolate and caramel round out the flavor profile. It never dips into dessert territory, forming a bold, pronounced heavy imperial stout body accented by barrel and maple syrup.
Mouth feel is thick and viscous, but with a lackluster texture thanks to a still, flat effervescence. It still has oomph and body, but lacks some of the heavy personality to go along with it.
Overall, this stout hits the gas and refuses to brake in the corners. It's heavy, forward, and yet balanced. Maple syrup is a wonderful addition, and accents the barrel character well.
Served in a 15.5oz Spiegelau tulip from a 375mL bottle.
