i had some really great beers from these guys when i was in town this time, across a range of styles, came away a lot more impressed overall than i had been in the past, seems like steps forward in quality have been made, and they are making some relevant liquid for sure. this is a sturdy wintery black ipa, a style i have continued to love, neat hop profile, kind of a best of both worlds thing, with columbus and strata, the old and the new, great proportions in this. very dark brown but not quite black from the tap, short tan head on it, looks deep and dreamy. the aroma is roast before hops, but only for s flash, the hops do come in quick, pine needles and bitter citrus, sap and weed, but then also like juicy orange and a more tropical side, trace coconut, i think more columbus than strata to my nose. but they work almost unexpectedly well together in this, chocolate and espresso in play, some middle malt richness, bitter too, but without being burnt or anything, no double jeopardy to me there, fresh, yummy. the flavor is similar, fresh piney hops with citrus fruitiness that lightens it some, nice dark chocolate nuance on the grain side, light caramel, maybe boiled awhile, reduced in a way thats flattering, no sign of its alcohol strength but lots of body here, and early onset bitterness that never gets to be too much but does slowly accelerate in this. familiar character overall here for the style, but the strata does bring it somewhere a little bit new at the same time, nice dosing on the hops, smooth middle palate and quicker finish with a hoppy roasty recall, very subtle almost english yeast character to me in here too, adds a little something. excellent on the whole, a style id like to see have a resurgence...
