This just in from Apex Brewing Company’s highly acclaimed and internally revered team of sensory analysts, quality control red-tapists and drinking-on-the-job-proffessionals: Sweet ripe pineapple, green mango, fruity bubblegum, juicy peach and a hint of diesel. Since they are hired for their extremely sensitive palettes, their experience in the field of tropical fruits and their infallible attention to detail we won’t argue with them. Cheers!

Pours a hazy, dark orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical/citrus hops, with distinct pineapple and lighter grapefruit notes, as well as just a hint of pine. Taste is a great balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly herbal and resinous notes, with tropical and citrus notes of distinct pineapple and lighter mango, grapefruit and tangerine, as well as some pine also coming through. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some pineapple, grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While I was never really a huge fan of Bru-1 hops, the combination with Sultana really creates an intense pineapple character here that works very well with the herbal earthiness of Columbus and resinous pine of Simcoe. There really is quite an interesting multi-faceted flavor profile to this with a great balance of sweet and bitter/resinous notes. I like how this breaks the mold a little and really wish more brewers would use Columbus hops in NEIPAs. Overall, this makes for a very enjoyable, a little different take on the New England IPA with a huge pineapple character and some more herbal and resinous notes.
