pretty solid, technically speaking, but after being super impressed with their award winning birkebeiner pils, i thought this might also be on that level, but its a step short of that very high bar, although still very enjoyable, just quite a bit more malty and weighty than expected, despite high refinement, and somehow also despite the lower abv, its substantial in the glass, straight up. rich brassy to even light copper colored, not what i was expecting, but clear and shiny and holding well over an inch of white head from the tap, over the rim and all, looks great, just a bit deeper than anticipated. aroma is bready, lightly toasty, not sweet even though it looks like it could be, it really isnt, european to me, maybe floor malted grain here, it has that earthiness and complexity, subtle but old worldy, even rustic in a way, i dig it, especially with the minerality and the lager yeast, good balance, decently hoppy too, grassy and maybe just off fresh there, but pleasantly proportioned, and thats how it tastes too, malt driven, cereal forward, a little husky and hully with an almost healthful sort of nutritive aspect, agricultural and organic, very well lagered, european in essence, more bitterness than hop nuance, but not as a negative attribute, it works. a few of these would get a little filling, and in a winter drinking context, this fit, but it seems like it might be a little much for hot weather. a little something different here in a sometimes samey style space, cool to have these guys selling beer in idaho now, ill be on the search for more of their stuff! very well made beer.
