My second beer from long beach brewing company; I was pretty impressed with their A Hui Hou fruited wheat beer so I decided to give this a shot as I really happen to like vienna style kellerbier.
Look: Pours a dull, semi-opaque copper orange with a one finger off white head of foam. Laces the glass well.
Aroma: Not much to the nose. Pleasant notes of candlewax, some nondescript malty caramel and hints of marzipan.
Taste: Not very yeasty which is a little atypical of the style. Upfront mildly bitter with light notes of spruce/burnt toffee. Turns malty and sweet midpalate (but not overtly so) with restrained notes of honey, caramel and marzipan. Some hints of toasted whole grain bread. A touch of grassiness on the back end. Well balanced overall with a very light and refreshing flavor.
Feel: Low carbonation mid-light body. Very clean to the palate.
Overall: Definitely one of the more "americanized" versions of kellerbier. I was expecting a little more of a pronounced yeasty flavor, but I still enjoyed it. I think this could use more influence from the yeast to really take it to that next level. This can be a tricky style of beer to brew so I won't hold their feet to the fire though.
I wouldn't go out of my way to track this beer down but it's certainly not a bad offering, plus I'm always happy to support local craft breweries. I'll definitely be buying more of their stuff in the future.
