not a bad beer, but not nearly as good as their wit or their mild. it has a strange chemical sort of note, a sharpness that doesnt belong in the style, not a bacterial thing i dont reckon, but some process error yielding an off flavor, to me it sort of tastes like the harsh sting of frozen orange juice concentrate, partly to do with the hops i think, but this shouldnt be here. the flavor other than that though is good, it has a piney hop complexion and good bitterness but is well balanced by a very sturdy malt base, some lighter crystal supporting the pale barley, not complex at all, but hearty and right for the style. a little sweetness from that is nice with the hop oils in here, honey and spruce notes jump out, but for me its hard to get past this dishsoapy element, chemical tasting. if they can figure out how to work this out of the beer and also get it carbonated up a little better, they will be onto something. i also noticed this flavor even more in their rye pale ale. they do have plastic fermenters so that could be part of it, but two of the four beers we had in here were excellent, so that doesnt totally explain it either...
