my first beer from this new spot that has moved into the location deep draft used to occupy on 17th. i am sad to see them go, but we havent had a lot of belgian focused spots here since cheeky monk went down, so i think this is a welcome addition to our beer scene. this is a belgian ipa, a little funky maybe some light new brett at the end, thick and hazy and sort of wheaty like a saison base, but highly hopped to be both spicy and bitter, and with a very developed belgian yeast complexion that has esters of green pear and white wine. complex but all the pieces fit pretty well together. its weird for me personally, i either love or hate high estery belgian yeast and high hop bitterness in the same sip, i dont really know what the catalyst is, but i like it a lot here, i think its less of the cotton candy and bubblegum and taffy belgian character, that never works with the hops to my palate, here its fruity and almost saison-esque, which does work. it drinks heavy for its abv though, even a small pour is filling to me, starchy and intense, even tiring from all the competing flavors, but i like this body and the high carbonation together and i like the drying funk it finishes with. not amazing, but a pretty god introduction to what these guys are all about!
