Edmund Egan was one of Charleston’s earliest commercial brewers, but he didn’t work alone. Egan’s success was built on the backs of enslaved black brewers, coopers, and other skilled people working in his brewery and in obscurity. We know their enslaver’s name, but not theirs. Black beer history was deliberately erased long before any of us were born, and still continues today.
We aim to amend these unfortunate truths.
8 And All is a Dark American Strong Ale. Our hope is that you pair it with red rice, fried okra, boiled peanuts, and many other Gullah Geechee dishes. A collaboration between Edmund’s Oast, Jamaal Lemon, Dr. Brian Alberts, Good Beer Hunting, and Lost Lagers, this beer is part of an ongoing effort to learn how American beer’s inequalities today were constructed — so we can tear them down and rebuild for the better.

Picked up a 16 oz single from TW-Greenville, SC 5-7-22 for $4.49. Canned 10-26-21; consumed 7-27-22.
Beer poured a murky reddish brown with an okay off-white head.
Nose is nice, of dark toasted malts and citrus.
Taste is nice as well with a large toasted caramel malt base that works nicely with grapefruit hopping. Finishes balanced with a touch of pine hops; 5/10 on my bitterness scale.
Mouthfeel is medium to large bodied, very smooth and full.
Overall this reminds me of the strong hoppy red ales from 10-20 years ago, a joy to revisit this style!

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
